I think fiddling a bit with DosBox is worth it. Picking Roland MT-32 or Waveblaster in the setup will use GM synth - and that's what you want (unless you know how to work Gravis Ultrasound). DosBox will be truer to the original game, especially with regards to music and sound. conf file to use with DosBox, I can paste that here.
